I am proud to be a Hispanic American and I am thrilled to give you the overview of this month. Hispanic Heritage month spans from September 15 to October 15. I will be going over what Hispanic Heritage month is, its importance, and most importantly how you can celebrate.
What is Hispanic Heritage Month? Hispanic Heritage Month was created back in 1968 under President Johnson for a week and later expanded to a month by Regan in 1988. Did you know that the difference between Hispanic and Latino is that ““Latino” to describe the diverse residents of the United States with cultural or ancestral ties to Latin America or the Caribbean.” and ““Hispanic” is used to signal a connection to Spain or the Spanish language.” This month is meant to celebrate Hispanic culture because of how prominent our culture has been here in the States and as well as how big of the population that resides here. Did you know that over 6o million of the Latino population is in the U.S, making up 18.9% of the population.
It’s important that we celebrate Hispanic Heritage because Latinos had a big impact in culture in our nation. It has shaped food, art, outlooks, ideas, perspectives, etc. They have led the way in entertainment like actors like Sofia Vergara or Jennifer Lopez in the music industry. They have been icons to represent the community and reach out to people to about our culture as well as be proud to be different, and to be a Latinx.
How can we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? You can do some research into some famous artist or go to a local Hispanic food truck or store and try some new foods/drinks. Talk to some friends from Hispanic background and learn about where they’re from and how they celebrate certain holidays and traditions.
