It’s Complicated. Social media, in particular networking, collaborating, and news
media sites have a consistent presence in our lives. For example, how we receive information on our interests, global affairs, and maintain connection can positively impact our mental health. However, the “Doom Scroll,”or finding yourself scrolling for an undetermined amount of time of violent or distressing content can have a negative effect to your mental health. Further, when we find ourselves scrolling, comparing ourselves to content creators, and constantly viewing violent images our mental health suffers. Here are some tips to help:
Practice grounding strategies before and after using social media such as deep breathing or mindfulness exercises
Give yourself time limits on the type of content you engage with or take a social media break
Reframe negative thoughts or comparisons to others
Seek therapeutic support individually or through a group setting
What do you think of the relationship of your mental health with social media? Is “Doom scrolling” causing gloom for you?
